Thom,
The myth backend service will not start without a tuner/input source...
You can configure it with a dummy via mythtv-setup, and then the backend
will start, and you can connect locally using the 127.0.0.1 address from the
frontend software. You can tail the backend log to see what (if any) errors
it it reporting about. Hopefully that answers the root question you asked.
