See http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/289838#289838 and
the rest of the thread. Anyone who really wants this to happen should
work out the issues with embedded MySQL--at which point this becomes an
easy-to-finish feature.

But in doing so, you lose the nice MythTV "Watch Recordings" UI.
(Though I'm happy with a file-browser-based UI when using files named
with mythrename.pl's '%T-%oY%om%od-%S' format specifier (ordered by
original airdate).) You also lose MythTV's bookmarks, and--most
importantly--commercial flagging info. (Though I'm happy with the
settings I have for jumps in xine--which allow me to skip any commercial
break in only a few keystrokes.)

Agreed. Not useful.

This would probably be most easily configured/accessed via the MythWeb
streaming that's currently being implemented. It may not be available
by the time 0.21 is released, but eventually... In the meantime, it's
not too hard to do with external tools (if your system has the power to
handle real-time transcoding to a lower res/bitrate--which may not be
the case for those of us recording HDTV).
