As I understand it, it should only be a matter of the USB-to-SATA 
bridge passing the commands through to the device.  The USB mass
storage spec does provide for passthrough commands, AFAIK, however
it seems many (all?) USB-(S)ATA bridge chipset vendors have chosen
not to implement this since it's not mandatory.
