It could be the KDE Sound System, which can be disabled as it can
interfere with your audio playback. If the device was missing (not yet
initialised) the error might be different (such as 'Device not
found').

# fuser /dev/dsp

might tell you if it is being used after logging in.

Any reason you are not using ALSA for audio playback?
