How about discussing on the mythtv-users list (
http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ).

First, set a mythfilldatabase log path (directory /and/ filename) for
mythfilldatabase and then see what the log says.  If you don't get a
log, chances are it's just a problem with running the backend as one
user and manually "testing" mythfilldatabase as a different user or
having a broken configuration when running mythbackend (i.e. no HOME
environment variable specified in the environment that calls mythbackend).
