I have a nVidia 5200 card and was getting 10fps in glxgears no matter
what driver I tried and couldn't get XvMC working at all.
When I installed the Kubuntu-Desktop, I found the display settings much
easier to configure and changing a few options had me getting 600fps in
glxgears (not great, but a vast improvement). I didn't get a chance to
try XvmC because the next time I booted that system tried to upgrade to
Feisty and hung at 34%. Now the system wont boot, but I feel like
starting again anyway because it was all feeling ill configured.
I've downloaded the Kubuntu install, but not done anything with it yet.
It'll be a week or so until I get the time, which is annoying as I have
a brand new BenQ W100 projector in it's box downstairs just waiting for
me to plug it in!
I'm torn. I like Ubuntu and it's huge user base and some of the Gnome
apps, but found Kubuntu more configurable. I really dislike the childish
way that most KDE apps start with a K, but that's hardly a reason not to
use a system. I know you can have both on one machine, but I've not got
the time to mess about with 2 different systems. I'd rather just get to
know one very well. That also 'feels' like there's less chance of
breaking stuff. No idea if that's actually right or wrong.
