This is exactly what I do for videos/music/photos - NFS shares on the
backend mounted at boot by the frontends.

I seem to recall reading a few ago that internal protocol support is
planned/in development to allow frontends to access media files on
backends in addition to normal recordings - which should remove the
requirement for NFS/Samba is many situations.
