Amazing timing on this, since I just this moment finished upgrading my
system and encountered the exact same problem. It turns out to be
relatively easy to fix. The problem is that when the new nvidia-graphics
driver is installed, there are some symlinks in the /usr/lib/xorg tree
that do not autoomatically get updated.
What you need to do is, go to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers, and make
sure that the "nvidia_drv.o" symlink points to the version of the
nvidia-1.0-####_drv.o file that matches your nvidia-graphics####-kmdl
package. If you are using the GLX module, then the same thing has to be
done in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions with the "nvidia" symlink
pointing to the correct nvidia-graphics-1.0-#### directory.
Reading the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file pointed me to this.
