I believe there are two separate type of options :

1.

you can amend the start and / or end time of >>every<< scheduled
recording to vary by plus or minus a set time from the scheduled start
and end time ( e.g. you can by default make every recording start 5
minutes early and finish ten minutes late ). the potential problem here
is that if you schedule two consecutive programs, the second may not be
recorded because you will have missed it's start time - with one tuner
you're stuffed, having multiple tuners will help avoid this.

2.

you can set the end time to be extended >>if there is no other scheduled
activity<< e.g. if you have only one tuner and have scheduled two
consecutive programs, the first will stop as scheduled and the second
will start on time ( as opposed to not at all in example one above ).
note that I have not been able to get this to work on version 0.19.
