I'm probably in those archives you looked at already, but I have never
been able to make firewire work with my DCT-6412. I even tried buying a
PCI firewire card in case it was just that Linux doesn't like my
motherboard's onboard firewire chips. No dice. I've tried all
combinations of reboots and poweroffs, and have never had anything other
than very brief periods where I was able to get something. But, the
channel changer has always worked, which is strange; I therefore know
that basic connectivity is there.
My next trick is to try swapping out the box with Comcast and hope I
have better luck with a different one (maybe hit a different firmware
revision or something)

That is exactly why I still have the 6412. There are quite a few
channels I watch that are available only with the box.
