It also occurs to me that you may be seeing the time needed to
initialize the capture card the first time, if you're going into live TV
the first time before a recording has happened.  On my other system,
where I use tvtime to watch live TV, the first time I launch tvtime
after booting it takes several seconds to load the kernel module and
initialize the card.
