I am getting the below in my mythbackend.log file
006-11-16 20:58:53.390 NVR: Won't work with the streaming interface, falling back
VIDIOCGMBUF:: Invalid argument

There's a lot more, but this seems to be the only error message.

I would greatly if someone with greater knowledge could take a quick look and tell me if anything is obviously wrong.

I have installed/reinstalled mythtv 3 times, each time starting from scratch.
mysql seems to be behaving OK now - also unistalled it a couple times.

I am frustrated and not sure what else to try - have seen references to this same error in google searches, but all that I try does not help.

I am using a Hauppage WinTV PVRUSB2 box; which, of course, works perfectly on WinXP.
Am running Fedora 5 with all latest patches - uname -r gives "2.6.18-1.2239.fc5"
Also, as others stated when tracking this down, cat /dev/video > x.mpg creates a perfectly good file.

Here are excerpts from /var/log/dmesg, and mythbackend.log - the box seems to be initialized except for the following 2 statements. I have definitely set my input to "television" and not composite, so don't quite understand why saa7115 thinks composite - this is what I think is why the signal shows bad.

saa7115 1-0021: Input:           Composite 4
saa7115 1-0021: Video signal:    bad
