It can be not just difficult but outright impossible to "go back" if  
the unstable build includes an unstable glibc, you would essentially  
have to start over again from scratch.

Having to compile everything is the main benefit of Gentoo IMHO, as  
you get things compiled the way you want them, though it can get a  
bit tedious for something like KDE :-)
