I do this on my laptop, but not myth boxen. The problem is that once you go
unmasked like this it's very hard to go back to stable without massive
recompile. One of the main arguments people cite against Gentoo is the
frequency of compiling. But if you stick with stable, it's really not that
bad. Anyway... I'm monologing...

You probably want to make sure your system is up to date before

Emerge esearch and then run esync instead of emerge --sync. This will cache
the metadata after each sync so that you can run esearch which is the same
as emerge -s but instant.
