If you search the archives, you'll find posts from me three years
ago saying the same thing.
Now, all of that needs to be qualified a bit... the Kell factor I
mentioned before, as well as the relatively low quality scaling that the
ivtv-based cards do mean that capturing a bit more might be useful. I did
some resolution tests (again... check the archives) and found that there
is a very slight increase in luminance resolution above 480x480 up to
about 540x480. After that, there was no measureable difference. 640x480
is kinda nice because it's got square pixels (i.e. PC-friendly). 720x480
is silly unless you want to archive directly to DVD.
