Sounds like a very similar problem as mine.  Though I'm using different
hardware.

I used -v all, but that was way too much information.  I then tried -v
important on by my frontend and backend (started the backend in a shell) and
got this:

select timeout - ivtv driver has stopped responding
2006-05-13 19:36:30.054 TVRec(1): Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None

Which after some digging is a know problem with ivtv.
