You won't really be missing much, IMHO.  I used my PVR-350's hardware 
decoder for about a week when I started with Myth a couple years ago.  I 
realized that it was too limited, that SDTV doesn't need hardware 
decode, and a $40 NVIDIA graphics card was far better suited to the task 
for most modern processors (with the exception of some of the Via ones).

Install John Harvey's ivtv X driver with Xv support to play back any 
type of video--including AVI, and other non-MPEG-2 videos.  Search the 
lists for "John Harvey x driver" for more info.
