Check that your monitor/TV refresh rate is the same as your source- 50Hz 
for PAL, 60 for NTSC.  Apart from that, there are some GL video timing 
settings that you can play with.  Also deinterlacing modes.  Check that 
you've got DMA turned on for your hard disk using hdparm, DMA should be 
set to 1.  Check with vmstat that you are not at/near 100% CPU (<80% is 
good).  Check there is nothing else happening on your frontend and/or 
network.
