They do not go away when I stop the backend. I didn't try the
disk-fill test, for obvious reasons. They do not go away after
unmounting and remounting. I am pretty sure they don't go away after a
while (as in 18 hours or less).

'rm foo' did indeed move foo to cifsxx (yes, only two characters;
however, I have a 47M stub remainder that is called cifsxxx when all
other files of comparable size are cifsxxxx). Neither Ctrl-C (abort)
nor Ctrl-D (close properly) changed the situation; the cifsxx file
remained.
