I've been tweaking around with alsa. I have ensured that alsa - which
could play before - now sees my driver in alsaconf and
/etc/modules.d/alsa effectively reads:
...
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
# Set this to the correct number of cards.
# Phil per http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=162832
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.10 ---
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
...
However, I have noticed that one gnome tool - the Multimedia System
Selector - gives an error on Default Input Plugin for ALSA. It says:
ALSA - Could not open resource for reading.
This sounds like it could be related to my problem. I'm now emerging
some other alsa packages: -oss -tools -firmware player and libsndfile.
Hrmm. No effect.
While watching the backend, I noticed this (==> added for emphasis):
2006-07-24 13:58:12.532 adding: hermes as a client (events: 1)
2006-07-24 13:58:12.548 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback
2006-07-24 13:58:12.548 adding: hermes as a client (events: 0)
2006-07-24 13:58:12.585 TVRec(1): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
==> VIDIOC_S_CTRL:V4L2_CID_AUDIO_MUTE: Invalid argument
2006-07-24 13:58:17.909 Running HouseKeeping
2006-07-24 13:58:23.670 TVRec(1): Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None
2006-07-24 13:58:24.189 Finished recording Burt Wolf: Travels & Tradi
The gnome volume control shows mute (even when I unmute), but alsaplayer
can play audibly.
Again, I have to apologise if this is too much info, but I'm really not
certain which will be relevant, so I'm trying to post all the
seemingly-relevant details I can locate.
