Well this definitely worked. I was able to downgrade
to QT 3.3.1  (I'm am sure that tried this before
unsuccesfully - although I think maybe I tried to
downgrade to 3.3.8. Hmmm. )

However, the downgrade seems to have uninstalled KDE,
and when I try to reinstall. I get other dependency
issues. 
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  arts: Depends: qt (>= 1:3.3.4) but 1:3.3.3-8 is to
be installed
  kde: Depends: qt (>= 1:3.3.4) but 1:3.3.3-8 is to be
installed
  kdebase: Depends: qt (>= 1:3.3.4) but 1:3.3.3-8 is
to be installed
  kdelibs: Depends: qt (>= 1:3.3.4) but 1:3.3.3-8 is
to be installed

Are you able to run KDE with this configuration?
