I had the same problem. irw just died on me. Had to change 
/etc/udev/rules.d/lirc.rules from
KERNEL="lirc[0-9]*",    NAME="lirc/%n"
KERNEL="lirc0",         SYMLINK="lirc"

to
KERNEL="lirc0",         NAME="lirc"
