Robert, the reason this seems complex is that it is a square
peg, round hole problem. If a show is recorded (press "R" for
instant record) any number of frontends can watch the recording
in progress and rewind independently. If the individuals want to
be able to change channels then each individuals will need to
access a different tuner. Whenever a live TV session is started,
the system chooses a tuner that is not currently busy. No one can
change the channel that someone else is watching from another
frontend and this is how it should be.
The advantage of having a recorder is that, well, you can record =).
I, like most people that use a DVR for some period of time, find
that it is possible to record any show that I think is worth watching.
When it comes time to turn on the boob tube, I can chose between
channel surfing hoping to find something 'good' on to start watching
from the middle or choose from thirty or more of my favorite shows
to watch from the beginning and skip commercials. Given this choice,
I never choose to watch live TV.
