I recently switched over to using udev instead of devfs. I'm quite
happy with that, but unless you are familiar with udev (and why it
exists), I would suggest that you follow the documentation as it exists
out there, and convert later, since it could potentially cause a lot of
head scratching. There should be no impact on you box's performance or
behavior from a user perspective by doing it the devfs way first.

I use gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.9-r4, and haven't had problems since
2.6.7. I started out on this box with 2.6.5-r1, however, even though
later kernels were out at the time, just to be safe and follow the docs
to the letter to allow for troubleshooting help later ;). I'm not using
NPTL currently, but may switch soon. Again, I advise a conservative
approach first, just to get things working, then use "stepwise
refinement" to tweak things. A mantra I used for myself as this process
went was "You're not dumb, just ignorant." ;)

Carefully note the differences between the authors' boxen in the links
above and your own. For specific hardware/peripheral configuration
issues, your best bet is the Gentoo Forums. Most of these docs (except
the MythTV.org docs) include a PVR-250/350 as part of the process -
YMMV. The MythTV-users archive is also very useful, but the
mailing-list vs. forum functionality differences may annoy you, and I
often had better luck with the Gentoo Forums for questions and
information sharing.
