My Low Quality recording profile records at about 1gig an hour.  Heres 
my settings:

Stream Type: MPEG-2 PS (not sure if this matters)
Bitrate: 2000
Max Bitrate: 2200
Audio Bitrate 128kps

Hope that helps, I'll warn you though, people who are picky about their 
video quality might not be able to stand watching it, thankfully I'm not 
picky.  I find it's a great setting to use for shows that I record on a 
daily basis, but not something I would use for my weekly favorites.
