Exactly what "non-GPL services" are you trying to avoid?  If you're 
referring to DataDirect, I believe the code to access/parse the data is 
native to Myth, and so *is* GPL (someone correct me?).  If you're 
referring to the fact that the guide data is being supplied by a 
commercial entity (Zap2It/Tribune Media) that puts restrictions on its 
use, then don't confuse the issue by dragging the GPL into it.

Aside from that, however, I agree that it would be useful for Myth to be 
able to populate the program table with some kind of default data if no 
guide data has been received.
