It's going to depend on quality of product but majority will go for
cheaper, that's why Tivo offering 10$ monthly sub. I think low price is the
best marketing tool, most people won't be able to afford right away
expansive DVR/PVR. Typical decision making about buying PVR goes like this:
I don't have money to afford lifesub but in near future I will, so I'll buy
it now with monthly sub and get lifesub later, possibly will buy more
expensive box too.
Here is my theory, Tivo's hardware cost more than they're selling it
for. So most of their profit from guide subscriptions and HMO option. There
is a reason for lifesub to be at 300$. So they are populating world with
their hardware and they just wait for more subs. If you buy Tivo w/ Lifesub,
that's where Tivo makes the least money or barely pays off for their service
or if you buy Tivo box and don't sub, Tivo should lose money. There are many
facts that could back up my theory but I don't want to go in depth of it.

If we believe the DVR market would be huge , would it be big enough for a
few companies to survive, instead of just for Tivo ? Look at DVD/VCR
products, there are about a dozen makers, with different price tags. Would
all consumers pick up Tivo just because it's $50 cheaper than other
products?
