[mythtv-users] Problem getting Myth fully functional on Gentoo

Hello,
I've been working on setting up a MythTV setup on my Gentoo system. I just have one problem and was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
Basically, the backend system seems to work fine. It schedules and records show and they record fine. I can play the resulting files back with something like mplayer.
The frontend works fine with the sole exception of video playback. If you try to watch live TV, the screen goes and stays black. The system has not crashed. If you switch to another window you can kill the session. Same kind of deal with watching pre-recorded shows via the frontend. The interesting thing is that the little thumbnail preview works as well as playing the .nuv files with mplayer.
I should point out I don't have a sound card in the system. Originally it was just going to be a backend, but at the time I didn't realize that MythWeb doesn't stream video. I'll add a sound card, but I doesn't seem like that should be the issue.
It seems like some sort of video config issue, but I don't recall seeing anything listed about special setup.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
