How about

mplayer -monitoraspect 4:3 -aspect 2.35 %s

Note that in a proper MPEG file, the movie's aspect should be 
autodetected (meaning -aspect should be unnecessary), so if this works, 
your rip contains errors (unless your rip is in an AVI or something).
