I had the same problem on my nvidia motherboard. Check your
/etc/modules.conf file. When I ran it, it put the 
"alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0" and the "alias sound-slot-0
snd-intel8x0" at the end of the list instead of after the char-major
lines. Yours should look something like this (the intel8x0 may differ
for you):
