Keep in mind that when you use these keys, it is affecting the live
record, but in mythtv you are NEVER watching the live record. You
need to watch live tv, and then press them, and then wait a few
seconds to see the result. It might be better to move this to
mythtvsetup, where it could show a real live signal and let you tweak
the settings. If mythtvsetup could display your video sources, it
might also be easier to debug the initial setup.

This might not be your problem though. I'm guessing you would have
landed on the brightness up key for a while and if you did this you
would have seen the change sooner or later.
