Aha, so there are actually two standards.  59.94 and 60...?  Presumably stuff like mplayer is smart enough just to play your DVD slightly slowly and keep it at 59.94 (assuming no pulldown)?

Thanks for clearing that up.  Actually I have not yet worked out under which conditions mplayer will actually change *real* screen resolution anyway, so I'm running the main X session in 50hz pal res.  This looks OK for most 60Hz material, but some high speed stuff goes blurry due to missed frames.
