Xv is an extension of the X server that allows to do hardware scaling
(which frees the CPU a bit when displaying video). XvMC is another
extension that uses hardware acceleration for decoding MPEG2 streams
(actually it helps decoding using hardware, this frees even more CPU).
Xv is supported by XFree for a lot of cards, but XvMC seems to be
supported only by nVidia drivers for the GeForce4 IIRC.
