[mythtv-users] Asus P4PE audio digital output

The Asus P4PE has an AD 1980 codec, with an RCA SPDIF output and an optical TOSLINK.  Under what conditions do these actually function?  Can I use the digital output to hook up to a receiver and get all my PC sound, including the MythTV output?  Is this a purely hardware thing, or does it require drivers, etc.?

I ask whether there are conditions on when these will work because my cable box only puts out digital output on digital channels.  As well, my receiver has digital outputs but they only work if the input in use is digital.
