I toyed with the idea, but decided getting to grips with LIRC would be 
better, and changing the batteries every few weeks would have gotten tedious.

That said, there are lots of keyboard/dongles available which bypass 
software entirely (hence it's literally plug 'n' play) by having an IR/RF 
adapter that plugs straight into the USB or PS2 ports. RF is usually 
preferable to IR.
