Start with the lirc part. You need to set up your modules.conf file for the 
right type of receiver. Assuming its a serial interface, use lirc_serial in 
modules.conf instead of lirc_i2c (or something like that -- I'm going off the 
top of my head).

No, I don't cover the setup for other receivers, so you'll need to deviate.

After you get the right kernel module loading for the IR receiver you have, 
get the TiVo lircd.conf file off the lirc site and give it a go.

No. All the necessary support is in the kernel and/or the lirc kernel modules.
