[mythtv-users] Satellite question.

I am more than a little unsure why people would order any variety of
expensive receiver for DirecTV/Myth.. though maybe I'm missing something
about the so-called 6th generation.. In my opinion, all you need is
something cheap that has a serial connector. I wouldn't recommend a
first generation (they're slow changing channels sometimes), but really
anything in the 3rd or 4th gen can be had for almost nothing nowadays,
and will be just fine for Myth-based use.. I did a quick search for the
hughes director dealie, and the big things it claims to offer are a
pretty onscreen display, selection of 30ish shows that it will
automatically flip to, and a word search.. All of this is stuff that
myth does anyway, making the hughes not more than an expensive channel
changer..

Having said that, your executive director (GCEB0) will do a serial cable
setup, so I think it would be wise to look in that direction. It should
have an RJ22 jack in the back, which will permit it to communicate
directly with your serial port.. I'm not sure about the reliability of
the IR blaster, but I'm relatively confident that the serial option will
be quicker and more reliable than an IR option..
