I think you posted these items in the wrong order - You started so far
off-topic, many will never have reached items 2 and 3!!!

If you read this paragraph, it should be "Fans!" not "Sound!" - I also wanted
a silent Myth system. Rather than slow fans I suggest (almost) no fans - Take
a look at www.quietpc.com

To solve your current fan issue, speak to the mobo manufacturer/reseller. You
should be able to configure a minimum speed reduction.

www.google.com

IMHO, gentoo should be reserved for people who do not need to ask these
questions. It is not a distro for the beginner. Use RedHat or Debian instead.
Just my opinion.

I do not think that these "shared-memory" video cards can ever be fully
accelerated - I'm sure some people will disagree. IIRC the generic agp/i8xx
support in XFree86 is about as good as it gets.

PC IR ports use a very different protocol to those used by remote controls.
The frequency is also quite differnt. There are some exceptions (see
www.lirc.org), but in general, they will never talk to eachother.

No, no and there is no point buying new hardware.

Please do post your experiences... Careful to read the docs on the web before
bugging the list though... :-)

Hope that helps some.
