Yes, that's normal if you select (enter/OK) the channel.  Hit 'M' (your menu
key) to actually select the channel.  Counter-intuitive, yes.  But there's
talk of that changing, if it hasn't already.

When I try and use the Guide in live tv, when I highlight a program that is
currently on, Myth still asks if I want to record, instead of switching to
the channel.  Is this normal?
