[mythtv-users] Lirc Serial

Is this the type of cable that plugs into your motherboard's IrDA port? Just
a IR receiver or transceiver and a couple of discrete components?

If so, you need to make sure you turn on the IrDA port in your BIOS, and
make sure that your kernel has modular support for IR devices before you
compile lirc. Finally, and this is important, I don't think you want to
select the lirc_serial driver, I think you need the lirc_sir driver for this
type of device.

I feel your pain. I just got mine working two days ago on a Gentoo machine
and I agree with you. There is a lack of good guidance out there for getting
lirc up and running. The official installation give you a general idea of
what to do, but it doesn't help you make the myriad of decisions you will
face when doing this.

On final question: Does debian use devfs to configure it's /dev file system?
If so, you'll need to install lirc 0.7.0_pre2, which includes support for
devfs. That was the killer for my Gentoo system. Once I did that, it all ran
fine.

Good Luck,
-Shane
