Multiple points of failure are not always bad things....

Troubleshooting can be minimal when an external chassis is the source of
failure... power supply, drive, or if the external device includes the
raid solution that... otherwise there is really nothing else to have
fail.

Other than the power supply you face the same things in an internal
solution... In my opinion, if it were cost effective, which it probably
isn't (he should save his money and just replace his current drives for
more capacity) having an external unit is the way to go (less drain on
his existing ps, and likely less heat generated in the case that houses
his cpu. Which is a major consideration when picking a case to house a
large number of drives, and that an external drive solution addresses)
