I think maybe changing the topic of this thread to Intel8x0 might be
beneficial...
This chipset is just painful. The ONLY way I could get spdif-out was to
compile ALSA drivers, utils and libs from cvs. This fixed the issue of not
getting AC3 at all, but created another with passthrough working, but no
analog to spdif so now all my analog stopped working because it is not
sending it out through the spdif, but spdif port is still live so my Onkyo
doesn't switch away from spdif to analog (and also assuming I have them both
hooked.
There is a muting flag set in the Left channel for this chipset that was
also fixed in CVS so I think this may resolve your trouble.

Has there ever been a resolution to this thread? I'm having the same
problem with the ALSA drivers for my SiS7012 (an intel810, ac97-based
clone). I only get live TV through the left channel.
