 This was related to not having ALSA installed. Further problems were caused
by the KDE sound manager using /dev/dsp. Rereading the HOWTO helped, however
the mixer explanation is a bit confusing and the amixer commands don't work
for me.

  This is due to the HTML::Parser error. To fix, I edited
/etc/sysconfig/i18n - changed LANG="en_US.UTF-8" to LANG="en_US".
I then reinstalled HTML::Parser.

  The lockups with the sis driver are odd. I found some references at the
winischhofer site to the sis drivers not supporting 'DRI'. I modified
/etc/X11/XF86Config and commented out the 'Load "dri"' line. So far, no
hangs.
