Well I got a deal on a NLX form factor machine from a dead .bomb with an
MSI 6131 motherboard, Intel BX chipset, a Celery 466, 64MB, ATI Rage128
onboard video and a Yamaha sound chip. Added a PVR-350, another 128MB, a
Maxtor 120G drive and a scan converter. Lack of SSE was lethal so the
Celery got swapped for a P3-600 and a fan speed controller was added to
lower the whine from the CPU fan. The PS fan is still an annoyance and
another fan controller needs to go in. Using the PVR-350 remote for most
daily use, but still haven't got the Hauppauge sensor going on Debian
Woody so I am using a Packard Bell IR sensor plugged into ttyS0. When the
remote isn't enough I have an Acer WIL-172U cordless keyboard/mouse on the
PS/2 ports. Have a DVD-CDRW in the box but it isn't yet doing much of
anything.

Everything works but the quality from the scan converter isn't perfect and
the GATOS driver to allow the old Rage to do Xv sometimes goes boom and
takes out X. If the PVR-350's output doesn't settle out in another couple
of months I'll probably stick a PCI video card into the one remaining
slot.

The machine works and it has changed the way I watch TV so it is already a
success in my book.

On the soapbox for a sec,, my hardware is plenty fast. It has no problem
with LiveTV (<50% CPU) or playing back DIVX files from elsewhere. DVD
playback also works with mplayer. So unless you are running multiple
cards you guys don't need those 2.4G Athlons and can run much
slower/cooler/quieter processors.

Well if it would allow either of my accounts to sign up I'd post there.
