If you've got the right kind of cable box, you could always connect to
both boxes via serial cable and use 2 tuner cards in one box... this, of
course, is assuming that your machine is powerful enough.  Other than
that, the answer is yes - what you propose would work.  But what you're
calling your frontend would just be a second backend...

Also - if you're going to put a cable box in the server room and use an
IR blaster, be aware that (in my experience) a lot of computer equipment
in one place can SERIOUSLY stop IR from working.  (Opening a SPARC 5
once stopped a remote from working.  It wasn't even line-of-sight - just
in the same room!)
