I'm using MariaDB 5.5.25 currently. Not through choice but because my distro 
stopped packaging mysql.

Indeed this has been an ultimate goal for a very long time now.

I'd like to see both maintained, but we've a dwindling number of developers 
with both perl experience and the inclination to work on the bindings. There 
are too many areas of greater importance which demand my attention 
unfortunately.

I cannot unfortunately say what the minimums are for the perl bindings. I 
don't know if this has ever been documented.
