[mythtv] adding to mainmenu.xml?

I'm just learning how to write a MythTV plugin, so please excuse me if
this is terribly obvious to everyone.

Let say I'm writing a MythTV plugin, and the plugin wants to have
itself on the Main Menu right under the "Watch TV' menu option.

What's the proper way to do that?

Should a plugin go an edit the mainmenu.xml file, and put itself
there?  Or is there some other "correct" way of doing it?
