[Just to make a point]

Because if your following the discussion any way a response at the top 
can be more readily read.
You don't have to scroll down each time to get to the new information, 
so you can just quickly click on each new message and immediately read 
it. It only works for single-issue threads though, but neither top nor 
bottom posting works well with multiple issues in one message. (In fact 
you yourself weren't bottom-posting, you were inter-posting)

The second point is that the one who responds doesn't have to edit the 
message to remove any sigs, you just start typing at the top. (although 
you could see this as an advantage of course in the way that people are 
almost forced to clean up the messgae a bit)
