Well, I am sometimes impatient, so I reworked Chris B's ivtv patch. 
Actually, I ended up rewriting the whole thing, to not be so ivtv
specific, pushed all translations into mpegrecorder, and automated the
settings menus so you are only shown what is availiable and useful. 
Patch works like a charm for me.  You will need to set up all your
Hardware MPEG2 profiles, otherwise you'll end up with the defaults
(8k/16k, MP2/384kbps)
