Yep, you're right. I had two versions of mplayer installed, and the first one in my path was the patched older version. The new one didn't work.

I have heard this rumour before (maybe it was you), but as far as I can tell
this is not true.  Mplayer CVS as of today (and all previous versions) will
explicitly reject MythTV video files unless the patch have explicitly been
applied.
